Acer Tempo DX900 review

Acer launched four Windows Mobile devices a few months back, but has not trumpeted them much since then. These devices follow the Acers purchases of mobile devices specialist E-TEN. It seems that Acer is waiting to send out its entry into force of the smart phone market until its Windows Mobile 6.5-based devices starts to appear at the end of this year.
Acer may be missing a trick by keeping quiet about Tempo DX900, however. It brings something unique to the United Kingdom: a Windows Mobile device that supports two SIM cards. It is available SIM-free (ironically) for around £ 400.

Design
DX900 is a slightly smart phone, measuring 61 at 106 by 17 mm it is pleasant to hold and not too large to fit in your pocket. It weighs 147 grams, making it heavier than your average Windows Mobile device, but not overly so.

The design is the crater walls. The Shell is made from black plastic with a Rubberised finish anywhere bar screen surround, which is shiny. Shiny silver-colored buttons located beneath the screen. There is call and end buttons and between them, a great navigation pad. All buttons are surrounded by white light when pressure — a useful touch in low light or at night.

There is an array of connectors and connectors around the edges on the DX900. To the left is a 2.5 mm headphone jack. Above this, there is a button with a long press, activates voice recording, and with a short depression starts the voice command software. Above this is a pair of volume rockers. Right edge has main power on/off switch, a microSD card slot and a camera button.

The sharp, bright touchscreen measures 71 mm (2.8 inches) across the diagonal, and has a default resolution of VGA 480 × 640 pixels. Windows Mobile 6.1 is especially finger-friendly does not, however, and you must use the pen to much activity. This live in a House on the back right of the bottom edge. The pen is telescopic, extension to 90 mm which you extract it from its slot, and very light.

DX900 ships of fire mains power charger, a USB PC cable, a stereo headset, a screen protector, an extra stylus, a protective pouch, a printed quick start guide and two CDs. One of these contains the user's manual, while the second contains Windows Mobile PC synchronization software.

Features
DX900 runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. It comes with 256 MB ROM and 128 MB of RAM. These are not generous specifications in accordance with the applicable standards, and a reasonable amount of storage memory can be used up by pre-installed extras (more on that later).

DX900 features a 533 MHz Samsung Nc3 6400 processor. Responsiveness is good but not great. This is a 3 G device with HSDPA support, and it includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There is a GPS receiver built-in, a front-facing camera for two-way video call and a 3-megapixel main camera with LED flash and self-portrait mirror. Device supports TV out, but no cables for this.

There is an accelerometer, you can activate, if you are satisfied with the device to change your screen orientation for which you have to disable it in your hand. This can be useful for things like Web browsing, photo viewing, enjoying a wide-screen orientation. You can configure the DX900 with a list of exemptions, tells it not to change direction, when certain programs are running.

The most significant feature of the DX900 is its support for the two SIMs, both of which are located under the battery.
